Welcome to West Texas
Hello! My name is Kyle and I study at Midwestern University in Phoenix, Arizona. During my time with Dr. Pass and Dr. Cherry, I felt very welcomed and appreciated to be here. I expected middle of nowhere west Texas to be a slow simple eye care practice, but it is anything from that. I was able to see disease of every severity as well as some rarer diseases too. Foreign bodies are a common walk-in appointment that I was able to gain first hand experience with removal and treatment. I felt that though out my rotation I was treated with respect as if I wasn’t just a student but a fellow colleague. Although having a correct diagnosis is important, there is a large emphasis on what is your plan for the patient, and the plan after that if that isn’t right. The biggest take away I got from this rotation is the mindfulness that you need to have in prescribing; whether it being glasses, contacts, or medications. As Dr. Pass will say “Do no harm” and Dr. Cherry “There is a right answer, a wrong answer, and not a wrong answer.” They both help guide you to making sure the patient is taken care of to the best ability.
About Me
I was born and raised in Yuma, Arizona so the desert wasn’t anything new to me. During my rotation here I stayed at the housing that was graciously offered by Dr. Pass. Along with me were my girlfriend and dog. We were all treated with respect and they took great care of any needs we had or questions that arose.
Exploring!
There is surprisingly a lot to do here! Granted everything is an hour or so away. Here‘s my quick guide of little trips that we did. Marathon has a nice garden to walk around, great coffee shop, a bbq spot with awesome peach cobbler. Alpine is good for local shopping. Fort Davis has the observatory and going to a star party is a must in our opinion. Marfa has some good food, particularly pizza, as well as the marfa lights. Lastly, Big Bend national park is do-able in a day and very nice sight seeing. We wished we had more time to camp and star gaze!
